Humber Squeaks Past Niagara in OCAA Semi-Final

Windsor, ON – The Humber College Women's Basketball team (11-0) squeaked past Niagara College (Welland) by a score of 80-74 in the OCAA Championship Semi-Final which is being hosted at the St. Clair College (Windsor) SportsPlex.   Humber built a 26-point lead in the third quarter but saw Niagara storm back to within four points in the final two minutes.  Humber will face host St. Clair in the Gold Medal final at 7:30pm on Thursday which will follow the Bronze Medal Game between Algonquin College (Ottawa) and Niagara at 5:00pm.  St. Clair beat Algonquin (Ottawa) 78-50 in the other semi-final to advance.

Humber went ahead 30-16 after the first quarter and increased their lead to 47-31 by halftime.  Niagara fell behind further which set the stage for their furious comeback and outscored Humber 24-9 in the final frame before the final buzzer ended their bid.

The teams shared similar shooting percentages (41-42%) from the floor but Niagara hit some key triples in the second half and were 83% from the free throw line where Humber seldom went and then only converted 38%.

Niagara allowed their deeper bench to outscore Humber 21-0 as the teams were nearly dead even in most statistical categories.  Humber did get out in transition well holding a 14-2 advantage in fast break points.

OCAA Player of the Year Miea Campbell-Johnson (Brampton, ON) was named the Humber Player of the Game after scoring a game high 30 points to go with an impressive 18 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocked shots.  Kia Watt (Toronto, ON) scored 20 points while Brittney English (12) and Nikki Yaglan (11) also reached double figures for the Hawks.

Niagara's Janee Harrison (St. Catharines, ON) scored 21 points and pulled down 8 rebounds to earn her team's Player of the Game Award with teammate Molly Taylor (Niagara Falls, ON) had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
