HUMBER WINS OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

WINDSOR, Ont. - Humber women's basketball claimed the 11th OCAA title in program history, defeating the St. Clair Saints Thursday evening, 103-91.

Senior Nikki Ylagan (Mississauga, Ont.) came up huge for the Hawks in the OCAA final, dropping 34 points – including 8-of-15 (53.3 per cent) from three-point range. Miea Campbell-Johnson (Brampton, Ont.) recorded her 10th double-double of the season on 23 points and 12 rebounds. Sarah Baptie (Mississauga, Ont.) picked up her second double-double for Humber on 12 points and 11 rebounds while Kia Watt (Toronto, Ont.) finished with 20 points and nine assists in the game.

Humber came out red hot in the first quarter, as the Saints had no answer for the duo of Ylagen and MCJ. Both finished with 10 points in the quarter as the Hawks held an 18-point lead after one.

The second quarter was far more competitive as the Saints pressed Humber on the defensive end leading to seven turnovers in the frame. The Hawks were outscored in the quarter but still led by a comfortable 15 points going into the half.

St. Clair fought their way back in the third, as they brought the Hawks down to just a single possession. The Saints shot 11-of-19 (57.9 per cent) from the floor in the quarter outscoring Humber by nine, trimming the lead to six with 10 minutes to play.

Humber began the final quarter strong, pushing their lead back up to 14 points with just five minutes left in regulation. Watt helped spark the run for Humber in the fourth putting up nine points on 4-of-6 (66.6 per cent) shooting from the floor. The Hawks never let St. Clair back within single digits as they held on to take the OCAA championship game.

OCAA Player of the Year Campbell-Johnson was named the Championship MVP, while Watt and Ylagan were named Championship All-Stars.

The Niagara Knights women's basketball team capped off a successful year with an OCAA bronze medal, after defeating the Algonquin Wolves 67-52 at the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship hosted by St. Clair College.

The Wolves, who finished second in the East Division (7-1), were unfortunately dealt a blow before arriving at the championship when they had a number of COVID positive tests, which would eventually hit head coach Jamie McLean before the bronze match-up.

Niagara was off and running through the first quarter jumping out to an early lead to end the first quarter with a 17-6 lead over Algonquin.

The Wolves put up a bit of a fight in the second quarter to put up 16 points to the Knights 18, but Niagara would end the half with a decent 34-23 lead after 20 minutes.

Despite exhaustion setting in for Algonquin, the Wolves continued to compete for the final stretch with the Knights starting to pull away with a 55-36 lead at the end of the third.

The eventual bronze medalist cruised to a 67-52 win to finish the tumultuous 2021-22 season.

Second-year forward and OCAA West Division Defensive Player of the Year Terin Hultink (Fenwick, Ont.) led the Knights with 14 points and 12 rebounds earning her the Player of the Game. Hultink was also named to the Championship All-Star team, finishing the two-game tournament with 22 points and 20 rebounds.
