HUMBER SUCCESSFULY DEFENDS OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

NORTH BAY, Ont. – Humber men's volleyball successfully defended its title, winning back-to-back OCAA championships after sweeping the Redeemer Royals on Thursday evening, 3-0. The final set scores were 25-8, 25-21 and 25-11. It is the first time the Hawks captured consecutive titles since winning three straight from 2010 to 2012.

Rrezart Sadiku (Kosovo) and Joshua Fadare (Markham, Ont.) dominated for the Hawks in the championship match, combining to score 33 of Humber's 57 points on the night. Sadiku finished with a game-high 18 points on 11 kills and seven aces while Fadare put up 15 points on 11 kills, three blocks and one ace.

Sadiku set the tone for Humber in the opening set helping his team jump out to a 9-2 lead after he delivered five straight aces in his first trip to the line. Sadiku picked up nine points in the first as Humber dominated the set taking it by 17 points.

The second set was tightly contested throughout as Redeemer looked to fight its way back into the match. The Royals held a one-point lead late but was answered by a 7-2 run by Humber to close out the set.

The Hawks began the third set with a 6-1 run to grab the momentum early. Humber never let their foot of the gas in the set building on their lead and ultimately took the set by 14 points to complete the sweep.

Sadiku was named the Championship MVP and Championship All-Star, while All-Canadian Jake Gomes (Oakville, Ont.) was named a Championship All-Star for the third time.

The Sheridan Bruins won their first OCAA men's volleyball medal in five seasons, defeating host Canadore 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16) in the OCAA bronze medal match.

Third-year right side Patrick Andula (Mississauga, Ont.) and third-year right side Marcus Ahmadzai (Brampton, Ont.) combined for 25 kills and 28 points for the Bruins. Fifth-year libero Liam Butchereit (Mississauga, Ont.) who was named a Championship All-Star, contributed a match-high eight digs.

Canadore fourth-year right side Jackson Brear (North Bay, Ont.) was also named a Championship All-Star with six kills and one service ace totalling seven points in defeat.

Sheridan last won OCAA bronze in 2016. Canadore has never won an OCAA medal.
