SEMI-FINALS SET AT OCAA BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

TORONTO - The matchups for Saturday's medal rounds are now confirmed at the 2022 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Championships.

Yuge Zeng (China) of George Brown continued his strong play in men's singles, winning Pool A with a 4-0 record. He will face George Brown teammate Sarthak Arora (India) who placed second in Pool B and defeated Humber's Ben Houle (Elliot Lake, Ont.) 21-13, 21-6 in a crossover playoff to advance to the semi-finals.

Men's singles Pool B winner Kunal Sokar (India) of Seneca will also face a teammate in the semi-finals. Sehaj Bhardwaj (India) finished in second place in Pool A and outlasted Cameron Duff (Hanmer, Ont.) of Cambrian 16-21, 21-19, 21-13 in a crossover to advance to the medal round.

Seneca's Tessa Liu (Taiwan) topped the women's singles standings with a 5-0 record and will take on fourth seed Morgan Grant (Thamesville, Ont.) of Fanshawe in the semi-finals. Another Seneca-Fanshawe semi-final will take place in women's singles between second seeded Dapasha Joshi (India) and No. 3 Zoya Virk (India).

Akara Chooprawad (Toronto, Ont.) and Anthony Tso (Markham, Ont.) of Seneca went undefeated in the men's doubles round robin, and will take on the St. Lawrence duo of Afsar Chowdhury (Kingston, Ont.) and Brandon Watkins (Finch, Ont.). The other semi-final has No. 2 seed San Dang (London, Ont.) and Arpitraj Sinha (Markham, Ont.) of Fanshawe taking on the third-ranked team of Harry Cotaras (Toronto, Ont.) and Nishant Batra (India) from Humber.

Humber's Victoria Duong (Kitchener, Ont.) and Praanjal Taneja (India) went undefeated in women's doubles action, and will take on the fourth-ranked George Brown duo of Patricia Gazmen (Scarborough, Ont.) and Sienna Tyler (United Kingdom). Seneca's Salina He (Toronto, Ont.) and Katie Liu (Richmond, B.C.), whose only loss came against Duong/Taneja, will battle Fanshawe's Kaitlyn Murray (Thessalon, Ont.) and Pitchayapuk Prasarn (Thailand) in the other semi-final.

Finally, Airi Moromisato (Peru) and Sirapob Kongubon (Thailand) of Humber topped mixed doubles play with a 4-0 record. They will take on No. 4 Mohemed Ashik (India) and Lalaine Siy (Toronto, Ont.) of Fanshawe in semi-final play. Boreal's second-seeded Frederic Houle (Elliot Lake, Ont.) and Michelle Kozlowskyj (Sudbury, Ont.) and George Brown's Fiona Kwan (Toronto, Ont.) and Ariel Dela Rosa (Scarborough, Ont.) compete in the other semi.

Winners of the semi-finals not only will compete for the OCAA gold medal, but will advance to the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton National Championships in Edmonton later this month.

The event features student-athletes from College Boreal (Sudbury); Cambrian College (Sudbury); Centennial College (Scarborough); Conestoga College (Kitchener); Fanshawe College (London); George Brown College (Toronto); Humber College (Etobicoke); St. Lawrence College (Kingston); and Seneca College (North York).
