DAY 1 COMPLETE AT OCAA BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

TORONTO - The top collegiate badminton players in the province have begun competition at the 2022 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Championships, hosted by George Brown College at the Epic Sports Badminton Club in Toronto from Mar. 3-5.

In men's singles, Yuge Zeng (China) of George Brown has jumped out to a 2-0 start in Pool A play with wins over Martin Truong (Vietnam) of Fanshawe 21-7, 21-9 and Sehaj Bhardwaj (India) of Seneca 21-18, 21-18. It was a key win over Bhardwaj who was 2-0 entering the match.

In Pool B, a couple individuals have jumped out to 2-0 records. Neither Cameron Duff (Hanmer, Ont.) of Cambrian or Kunal Sokar (India) of Seneca dropped a set in the opening day of competition.

In women's singles play, a pair of Seneca athletes combined for a 6-1 record to sit atop of the standings. The only loss was when they faced each other; Tessa Liu (Taiwan) defeated her teammate Dapasha Joshi (India) 21-14, 21-13.

In men's doubles, the match of the day occurred between Seneca and Fanshawe. Akara Chooprawad (Toronto, Ont.) and Anthony Tso (Markham, Ont.) of Seneca defeated San Dang (London, Ont.) and Arpitraj Sinha (Markham, Ont.) of Fanshawe 21-16, 22-24, 21-19. Chooprawad/Tso are 3-0 while Dang/Sinha are 3-1.

Finally in mixed doubles, Boreal's Frederic Houle (Elliot Lake, Ont.) and Michelle Kozlowskyj (Sudbury, Ont.) and Airi Moromisato (Peru) and Sirapob Kongubon (Thailand) of Humber are both 2-0.

The event features student-athletes from College Boreal (Sudbury); Cambrian College (Sudbury); Centennial College (Scarborough); Conestoga College (Kitchener); Fanshawe College (London); George Brown College (Toronto); Humber College (Etobicoke); St. Lawrence College (Kingston); and Seneca College (North York).

The gold and silver medalists from OCAA will advance to the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton National Championships in Edmonton later this month.
