TRENTON, Ont. - Durham College's Shay Morris (Ajax) is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Rugby Sevens Player of the Year. Morris received the award in a ceremony held in Trenton, Ont., on Friday evening.
The second-year back was the OCAA Scoring Champion scoring 22 tries while adding 31 converts for 172 points, eight points shy of an OCAA single season record. Morris played in every game for the regular season champion Durham Lords who won 18 straight matches. Morris is also an OCAA League All-Star.
Durham teammate Emily Cooper (Guelph) is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The back was second behind Morris in league scoring, setting a new OCAA single season record scoring 34 tries. The exploits of Morris and Cooper helped Durham establish a new OCAA single season record of 578 total points scored.
Donnie Maillet of Fleming College is the OCAA Coach of the Year. Maillet led the Knights to a second-place finish in 2022, two positions better than last season's abbreviated schedule. Fleming's 12-6 regular season record is its first above .500 since 2017.
This year's OCAA League All-Stars include Madeline Clothier (Russell), Courtney Comeau (Stirling) and Sydney Seymour (Cornwall) of Algonquin College; Heather Bews (Whitby), Morris and Cooper of Durham; Madison Falls (Bobcaygeon), Rachael King (Peterborough) and Abby Todd (Otonabee) of Fleming; Renee Bowen (Mississauga) of Humber College; Chiara Van der Zalm (Niagara-on-the-Lake) of Loyalist College; Katelyn Neveu (Kingston) and Ella Van Hal (Kingston) of St. Lawrence College; and Olivia Hooper (Barrie) and Angelina Jahshan (East Gwillimbury) of Seneca College.
