GEORGE BROWN UPSETS NO. 10 CONESTOGA IN THRILLING QUARTER-FINAL MATCH

VAUGHAN – The George Brown Huskies have defeated the No. 10 Conestoga Condors 1-1 (4-3 PK) in a tight match that required penalty kicks. The entertaining game saw both teams have glorious chances over the 120 minutes of play. The back-and-forth battle finally concluded in penalty kicks when Huskies’ goalkeeper Anthony Cerminara stopped Daniel Aguilera’s penalty attempt.

The George Brown Huskies controlled play for most of the first half against Conestoga; however, both teams could not bury a goal and the first 45 ended in a scoreless draw. The Huskies' offence posted six shot attempts, with four coming on target, while the Condors had one shot attempt but could not hit the net. Pedja Jovicic made four saves for the Condors in the first half.

The Huskies’ offensive momentum carried onto the second half, and they would finally bury the game’s first goal in the 50th minute. As Yonis Jama controlled the ball just outside the 18-yard box, he would slip the ball by a Conestoga defender to find a speedy Gianfranco Gileppo, who would pot his first goal of the Huskies' 2022 campaign.

As Conestoga was pushing for the equalizing goal, they would be awarded a penalty kick late in the game after a Huskies' foul in the box. Kitchener-native Saab Kohar would line up for a shot from the penalty spot and make no mistake to knot the game at one in the 88th minute.

Ninety minutes wasn't enough to crown a victor of this tight quarterfinal matchup, and extra time was needed. The first 15-minute half of extra time saw both teams have chances to score the go-ahead tally, but neither squad could capitalize on their opportunities. The back-and-forth second extra time half saw both teams missing the net by mere inches to take the lead. Extra time ended as it began with the game tied 1-1.

After extra time remained goalless, penalty kicks would take place to declare a winner. After ten shooters, the Huskies would win the game on penalty kicks, 1-1 (4-3 PK).

Anthony Cerminara for George Brown and Carson Davison were named the players of the match.

The George Brown Huskies will face the St. Clair-Seneca quarterfinal match winner in a semi-final battle scheduled for 3 p.m. on October 28.
