VILELA HEADLINES OCAA MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS

MARKHAM, Ont. - George Brown College's Filipe Vilela (Toronto) is the 2018 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Soccer Player of the Year. He received the award in a ceremony held in Markham, Ont., on Wednesday evening.

The OCAA Scoring Champion scored 14 goals in nine games, including five multi-goal contests. George Brown was undefeated with Vilela in the line-up. The second-year midfielder is also an OCAA All-Star and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian.

Niagara's Jordi Amores (St. Catharines) is also a CCAA All-Canadian. The fifth-year midfielder continued his strong presence on a Knights squad that reached seven wins during the regular season, a new team record. Amores is also an OCAA All-Star.

Durham's Dave Ashfield is the OCAA's nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The East Division Coach of the Year, Ashfield led Durham to a 6-0-4 this season following its OCAA championship a year ago. The Lords allowed just eight goals against all season. Other candidates for the award were Central Division Coach of the Year Andrew Seuradge of Sheridan and West Division Coach of the Year Gad Espinosa of Redeemer.

The Overall Rookie of the Year is Ben Vyfschaft (London) of Fanshawe. Vyfschaft was also the West Division Scoring Champion scoring a dozen goals over eight games. Other candidates for the award were East Division Rookie of the Year Nigel Buckley (Pickering) of Durham and Central Division Rookie of the Year Cyrus Rollocks (Brampton) of Sheridan. Both were also named OCAA All-Stars.

The top defenders of 2018 include East Division Defensive Player of the Year Ostap Hamarmyk (Ukraine) of Centennial; Central Division Defensive Player of the Year Riley Ferrazzo (Richmond Hill) of Humber; and West Division Defensive Player of the Year Bradley Heath (Markham) of Fanshawe. Hamarmyk and Heath were also named OCAA All-Stars, as well as East Division Scoring Champion Jeremy Bangala (Pickering) of Durham who scored 13 goals.

The top defensive teams were also recognized, including Algonquin in the East Division, Sheridan in the Central Division and Fanshawe in the West Division. Two of the three were also regular season champions, the lone acceptation being Humber winning the Central Division.

Several OCAA All-Stars were also recognized. In addition to Bangala and Hamarmyk, OCAA East Division All-Stars include Algonquin's Ebrahim Al-Ariky (Kuwait), Lucas Blain (France), Colin Gibson (Ottawa), Justin Gibson (Ottawa) and Marco Natoli (Ottawa); Centennial's Adrian Bojaca-Tolentino (Scarborough) and Liam Cox (Toronto); and Durham's Nigel Buckley (Pickering) and Cody Kraemer (Whitby).
