Huskies Edge Royals in Semifinals, 79-76

SARNIA – It was an emotional contest from start to finish, but the George Brown Huskies punched their ticket to the Gold Medal contest on Sunday afternoon.

In a tightly contested game, the Huskies edged the Redeemer Royals, 79-76, to advance to Sunday’s Championship Game. George Brown will face off against the Humber Hawks on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

In addition to an appearance in the Gold Medal game, the Huskies have advanced to the 2020 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship due to the Hawks hosting the event.

Guard Caldre Campbell was named the Huskies’ Player of the Game after leading the George Brown offense with 18 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Campbell was 7-of-10 from the field on the day, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.

Forward Jacobus Vanderpol picked up Player of the Game honours for the Royals. He finished the night with a game-high 22 points, on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, to go along with six rebounds in the loss.

The Huskies entered the fourth quarter with a six-point lead, at 60-54. Ten straight points from Elijah Lostracco erased the deficit for Redeemer, pushing them to a four-point lead in the process. Back and forth the teams went from there, with neither team able to gain much separation on the scoreboard.

With 2:09 left to play, Vanderpol got a jumper to go, giving the Royals a 76-73 lead. Campbell answered with a three-pointer on the next possession for the Huskies to square things up at 76-all. Down the stretch, the Royals were held off the board, allowing George Brown to take a lead down the stretch and weather the storm.

The Huskies came away with a hard-fought three-point win over the Royals, 79-76, to advance to the Gold Medal game.
