MEDAL OPPONENTS SET AT OCAA CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Four medal games will take place on Monday to conclude the 2022 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships.

The Humber Hawks will square off against the Mohawk Mountaineers for the men's team gold. Humber completed the round robin with a perfect 5-0 record, with Mohawk coming the closest to handing the Hawks a loss dropping a 8-7 outcome in extra ends in Saturday play.

Skipped by Zack Shurtleff (Burlington, Ont.), Humber knocked off the Niagara Knights 6-2 in the semi-finals on Sunday to advance to the gold medal game. Mohawk, led by skip Jacob Jones (Brantford, Ont.), narrowly edged the Confederation Thunderhawks 6-5 in the other semi-final. Niagara and Confederation will play for bronze on Monday.

The Humber women, skipped by Meaghan Mallett (Waterloo, Ont.), has also advanced to the gold medal game, earning a bye to the final with a 5-1 record in round robin play. The opponent will be the Niagara Knights who, led by skip Melissa Borowski (Welland, Ont.), defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 8-1 in the semi-final on Sunday. The Fanshawe rink of skip Lauren Massey (London, Ont.), vice Victoria Hinchliffe (Guelph, Ont.), second Leah Hopkins (Ingersoll, Ont.) and lead Karima Hassan (London, Ont.) was awarded the bronze medal.

The mixed doubles gold medal final will be contested Monday between the Mohawk pair of Ashley Verhees (Elmwood, Ont.) and Eric Just (Hamilton, Ont.) and the Humber-2 team of Julie Boulos (Mississauga, Ont.) and Emerson Steffler (Markham, Ont.). In a civil semi-final on Sunday, Humber-2 defeated Humber-1 7-3.

The event features student-athletes from Confederation College (Thunder Bay); Fanshawe College (London); Humber College (Etobicoke); Mohawk College (Hamilton); Niagara College (Welland); and host Sault. The championship consists of mixed doubles, men's and women's team competitions.

All participating schools have a men's team competing in a single round robin competition, while Fanshawe, Humber, Niagara and Sault are competing in a double round robin women's competition. For this year's event, teams may include three or four curlers.

Mixed doubles, which debuted at the 2020 championships, feature two teams from Humber and one from Mohawk. The three teams are competing in a double round robin.

A total of eight draws will take place over four days of competition, including playoffs. The top four men's teams will advance to the semi-finals, while the top teams in the women's and mixed doubles competition advance directly to the championship. Women's and mixed doubles semi-finals will be contested between the second and third-place teams.

Gold medal games and the men's bronze medal game will take place on the final morning of competition on Feb. 21. There will be no Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship this season.

It marks the ninth occasion that the OCAA Curling Championships will take place in the Soo, the last time being in 2018. Spectators will be permitted following the rules of the Community First Curling Centre and public health regulations.
