
KITCHENER, Ont. - The 2025 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Championships kicked off today at Conestoga College's Student Recreation Centre with Ontario's top collegiate players battling for a chance to advance to the CCAA national championships in Edmonton later this month.
The first day featured four rounds of intense competition across the women's singles, men's singles, women's doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles divisions.
Here are some standout performances from the first day of competition:
In the men's singles tournament, George Brown's Sahil Lokhande dominated pool play, winning all three of his matches in straight sets, including a commanding 21-7, 21-2 victory.
In women's singles action, Conestoga's Mandy Ni went undefeated in Pool A West, securing four impressive wins, including a 21-6, 21-7 victory to finish her final match of the day.
In men's doubles, Fanshawe's Jan Dave Deocampo and Ty Nguyen delivered a memorable performance winning all three matches in straight sets and are poised to move on as top contenders in the tournament.
In women's doubles play, Lambton's Lauren Goldsack and Carolina Huete-Jacobs showcased resilience, winning all three of their matches in three games apiece to lead the way in their pool.
In mixed doubles competition, Centennial's Lheidelle Santos and Jonathan Ma dominated their matches, ending the day with three wins, highlighted by an impressive 21-3, 21-3 victory.

The OCAA gold and silver medalists will qualify for the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships, set to take place in Edmonton from February 27 to March 1.
