Mohawk rebounds after heart breaker on Day One; defeat Centennial 3-0

Day Two of the 2018 belairdirect OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships continued as the second game of the consolation round featured another West-East battle. This time, it was between the fifth seeded Mohawk Mountaineers of the OCAA West and the second seeded Centennial Colts of the OCAA East.

 

Mohawk was four points away from shocking the OCAA and upsetting the 10-time defending provincial champion Humber Hawks in straight sets. However, they could not finish the job and fell in five sets to Humber (25-23,  25-21, 21-25, 14-25, 9-15).

 

Kelsey Kovar led Mohawk with 17 points on 14 kills while Amanda Kuiper was named Player of the Game for the Mountaineers with a game high 31 assists.

 

After two tough sets in which was marred by errors on the attack and on the serve, the host Colts came back from down six points and won in the third set. Centennial had two chances to force a deciding fifth set but failed to convert as the comeback bid was denied, falling to the St. Clair Saints in four sets (21-25, 17-25, 26-24, 24-26).

 

Mari Pikkov led all scorers with 19 points on 15 kills while Emily Joe had 10 points but Shanelle Woods had the game of her life, forcing a fourth set with an ace and her service game kept the Colts in it, leading to Woods being named Player of the Game for the hosts.

 

Mohawk was determined not to blow another two set lead as they took care of business, beating Centennial in straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-13).

 

Jessica Heidbuurt was named Player of the Game for the Mountaineers with 12 points. Danielle Kamps finished with a game high 13 points while Kelsey Kovar also had 12 points on a game high six aces and Amanda Kuiper dished out a game high 30 assists.

 

Mari Pikkov, in her final game for Centennial, was named the Player of the Game for the Colts with a team high nine points on seven kills. Nadjema Soro finished with a team high 14 assists while Shanelle Woods had a game high three blocks and Kadeisha Powell-Graham, who also played her last game as a Colt, finished with a game high 10 digs.

 

The Mountaineers outclassed the Colts in kills (35-24), assists (32-22), and aces (14-3) while Centennial beat Mohawk in digs (37-27).

 

With the win, Mohawk advances to the consolation final to play the Fanshawe Falcons with fifth place on the line. For the hosts, however, their season is over.

 

The first set saw Kovar hit three straight aces as Mohawk took an early 5-2 lead and never gave up the lead from there, although the Colts cut the deficit to two on a couple of occasions.

 

A kill from Kamps, her fourth of the set, gave the Mountaineers the 25-21 first set victory. Joe led Centennial with five kills in the first set.

 

The second set featured a game of runs as the service game from both teams were on display. Kamps and Lindsay Vanderweide led separate 7-0 runs for the Mountaineers while Joe and Meilin Carmichael were at the forefront of a pair of 6-0 runs for the Colts.

 

It was Mohawk, however, who had the last run as a kill from Kamps capped off four straight points as the Mountaineers took the second set, 25-19.

 

It was all Mountaineers in the third set as they scored 20 of the first 28 points of the set and a service error from Heather Sanchez ended the match as Mohawk won the third set, 25-13.
