No. 11 Georgian Takes Down Mohawk to Advance To Consolation Final, 3-0

ETOBICOKE, Ont –- The No. 11 Georgian Grizzlies (16-2, 1st East) bounced back on day two at the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship with a straight-set sweep over the Mohawk Mountaineers (10-8, 6th West), 25-18, 25-18, and 25-19 at the North Campus Gym, Friday afternoon.

The first set belonged to the Grizzlies as they came out and forced two quick Mohawk timeouts as they led 9-1. The Mountaineers would play better throughout the rest of the set but were unable to overcome the early deficit losing the first set to Georgian 25-18.

The second set saw Mohawk again fall behind early trailing Georgian 8-3. Things began to heat up midway through the set with both teams picking up yellow cards following a Georgian kill. The Grizzlies would again hold the lead wire to wire in the set winning the second 25-18 and took a commanding 2-0 set lead.

Georgian again dictated the play in the third set only allowing Mohawk to score consecutive points twice in the set. The Grizzlies were able to roll on to take the final set by a score of 25-19, taking the match in straight sets

Second-year outside hitter Joel Van Dyk was named the player of the game for the Coyotes, finishing with seven points coming off six kills and an ace.

Second-year middle Michael Fors was named the player of the game for the Grizzlies, finishing with nine points on eight kills and a block.

Georgian will now face the Conestoga Condors in the consolation final Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
